LINGUISTIC ERRORS AMONG ENGLISH LEARNERS: PROBLEMS OF VOCABULARY AND SPELLING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL

Abstract

This study analyses the vocabulary and spelling errors while using English among high school students. The skill of writing is taken into consideration. The learner’s vocabulary and writing skills are important for the success in academic development as it allows them to access the depth of the curriculum and improve language skills. Writing skills occupy a significant role in the development of English language. This study discovers that students usually fall behind in vocabulary and writing skills. Mistakes are frequent and common at the high school level. This study is about the reasons why they face difficulties, and attempts to offer solutions to rectify the issue.

Introduction

Language studies give stress to vocabulary development. Vocabulary is an essential aspect in second and foreign language acquisition. without an appropriate and sufficient idea on vocabulary, the student fails understand others or express one’s own feelings. After a lengthy period of focusing on the development of grammatical competence, language instructors and researches now recognize the relevance of vocabulary in writing. Vocabulary plays an important role in language learning. Thornbury quotes David Wilkins and states that without grammatical usage very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.
Frequent and unconscious repetition of mistakes while writing is another problem faced by students. English. Students of all levels face many problems while writing any task. Though writing is one of the best ways of expressing thoughts, students often cannot make sense or convey the meaning to the reader through their writing task. Lack of proficiency in language, large classes, unqualified students, unmotivated novices, lack of resources becomes the part of the ethology. Mostly grammatical errors hinder their writings.

 Need and Significance

Vocabulary and writing accurately are given more importance in English language, because this helps the learners to emphasise themselves better. Knowledge of more words allows leaners to choose their words more precisely so that communication becomes more affective and accurate while interacting with others. It empowers learners academically. Mastery over good writing at an early age is associated with better outcomes on the overall performance of children in school. Students who learn to write a complete sentence without any error from an early age are more likely to develop that skill while they become old.

 Objectives of the Study

  • To analyse the situations related to problems faced by students in the use of vocabulary.
  • To analyse the cause of repeated spelling errors while writing.
  • To evolve steps that help students to be aware of the importance of vocabulary and writing accuracy in daily life.
  • To enhance deep skills in writing and vocabulary.
  • To help students develop a positive attitude towards learning English language.
  • To motivate students to write sentences and paragraphs without errors.

Procedure

Students were given language games and activities so that they unconsciously fall into a system of learning, and  can easily enhance their vocabulary through  games and activities. Students were provided with the basics of grammar, orienting them to the general patterns and structures of the English language.  Students are made to write different types of discourses so that the teacher can help them with corrections. Regular checking of notebooks and conducting unit test made the students improve their vocabulary and this made them reduce the spelling mistakes.

 Findings

  •  By the regular system of notebook checking the teacher can help students to find out their minute mistakes while writing and usage of vocabulary in English.
  • Using innovative methods like vocabulary games and activates to enhance writing without mistakes helps students to be more interested in learning new words and vocabulary.
  • Use of proper motivation made the students more active to focus on their writing and vocabulary.
  • Teaching the basics of grammar and sentence structures made students develop their efficiency in writing English.

 Conclusion

 As non-native users of English, the High School students in Kerala are found to have a general nature to have spelling errors in their writing. They also demonstrate a lack of adequate vocabulary. This often stands as a discouraging note in their confident use of English. A vocabulary that is dynamic and rich improves all areas of communication – listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing is the best way to teach, inform entertain one’s behaviour and educate oneself. Improvement in this level is possible through the teacher’s active involvement and interaction through language and vocabulary games. Unconscious development of awareness of the rules and structure of language contributes much to the correction of spelling errors and also provides a richness in vocabulary.
